Addiction and Family Dynamics (Part 1)
Research into dysfunctional families marked by addiction and codependency have shown there are various 'rules' and 'roles' that dictate how members act to create homeostasis (an equilibrium to adapt to the dysfunction). These rules and roles are not based on individual autonomy. Rather, they are coping mechanisms designed for 'survival' in the dysfunctional family dynamic. Relapse Prevention Part 2 (3 Strategies) Episode 49
In this episode we will explore three more relapse prevention strategies to help you or a loved one stay sober from drugs, alcohol, or other addictions. Learn ways to increase your self-efficacy, which is our intrinsic belief in our ability to remain sober. Negative emotions that attack our self-efficacy are one of the number one causes of lapse or relapse. We will also discuss physical, mental, emotional, and relational lifestyle changes that will decrease relapse likelihood. Finally, we will examine Abstinence Violation Effect. This is black and white thinking that causes us to feel like we might as well go all the way in if we experience a set back: "I had a drink so I might as well finish the entire bottle," or "I had a piece of cake so I might as well eat the entire thing." This mentality is detrimental to long term sobriety and it damages our self-efficacy and life style change efforts. I will also share my own personal experiences with addiction and recovery to illustrate these three relapse prevention strategies. Please share this with anyone you know who struggles with addiction.

Why Relapse is a Normal Part of Recovery (Episode 47)
While relapse is certainly not encouraged, it is usually a normal part of the addiction recovery process. Negative emotions are one of the main causes of relapse. Many people who struggle with addictions experience emotional, physical and environmental triggers they may not be aware of because they are disconnected from themselves emotionally. In addition, we may not have the best coping skills since we have used our addiction to cope with challenges and sooth our pain. In this episode we explore what lapse and relapse is, how it happens, why it is normal, and some relapse prevention strategies. Please share this podcast with anyone you know who needs help.
