Research into dysfunctional families marked by addiction and codependency have shown there are various 'rules' and 'roles' that dictate how members act to create homeostasis (an equilibrium to adapt to the dysfunction). These rules and roles are not based on individual autonomy. Rather, they are coping mechanisms designed for 'survival' in the dysfunctional family dynamic.
